Alaskan Caribou Hunt

Alaskan hunting is highly regulated by the Department of Natural Resources. For the residents the number of caribou harvested is double of nonresidents because for many natives this is subsistence hunting. Meat rates with high commodities. A hunter may not leave any edible meat in the field, under penalty of law. You must bring it all out and if you have no need for it then give it to someone who will use it and just get a receipt for it. Picture quality is poor due to the late evening in a rainy weather during which flash failed.

Caribou meat and antlers had to be carried out to the main camp where the bush pilot could pick it up and store it in a freezer till the hunt is over. I was sort of lucky to get a magnificent caribou even though it was late into the evening, about 9:30 p.m. By the time we returned to camp it was already 2:00 a.m., and we were soaking wet, only to return later the same morning to bring out the the rest of the meat and antlers. On a hunt like this your body runs on adrenaline and sheer will power burning calories and losing body weight very quickly.
