Siegfried
Line Reenactment
During the cold winter of 1944 on the Western front when Allied forces came across France to the border of Germany soldiers were looking at the "teeth of a dragon" as it became to be known by the combatants. German forces on its Northern France and Belgium border fortified their defensive lines known as Ziegfried LIne. Allied Commanders decided that the line had to be broken by brute force. Casualties were heavy on both sides. To commemorate this battle actors from Illinois and Indiana reenacted this battle in Silver Springs State Park in Illinois. I spent half a day with the German forces and the other half with the Allied soldiers. To witness for me how Allied soldiers walked into the direct fire of a German machine gunner chilled my spine and rattle my psyche to the core. I will never forget that day. My special tribute goes to the particpants of the battle, many are still living in their advanced age.

3rd Infantry Division, 7th Army supplemented by the Australians were the actual combatants at the Siegfried Line.
